Description

This is a nice UGC galaxy I imaged a couple of years ago with my 16" dob. I wanted to go back and get a deeper image, so I captured 3.2 hours of data on it with my SCT and OSC ASI294 MC Pro back in August over a couple of evenings from my suburban backyard. I took a first pass at processing, but wasn't happy with the results so I let it sit for a while on my computer. This week made a second attempt, and I am much happier with the result. The faint outer regions of the galaxy were tough to process right, given the light pollution at my house and working without a focal reducer at 2800mm with my 11"SCT (the focal reducer was giving me red halos around most stars, so I decided to go without the second half of this summer). Notice the bluish hazy patch on the upper left edge of the galaxy. I can't tell if this is a satellite galaxy or a massive star burst region on the edge of the galaxy - or maybe both! The inner region is pretty bright, so should be easily visible visually in 8" and up scopes.

Galaxy specs from SIMBAD, NEDS and measurements of my image:

Constellation: Lacerta - near the plane of the Milky Way in Cygnus
Galaxy type: SBb/Sc (Barred spiral!)
Diameter: 3.6 x 0.8 arcmin (204,000 light years across - that really big for a spiral!)

Magnitude: 11.04 mag(V)

Distance: 193 mly (z=0.013946)

Absolute magnitude (V) of -22.83
Color index: 2.46 CI(B-V) (that is pretty red - I think there is a lot of reddening from dust in our own galaxy)
